Pregnancy massage is similar to regular massage in that it aims to relax tense muscles, ease sore spots, improve circulation and mobility, and generally make you feel good. It can help to alleviate backache, leg cramps and swelling that can accompany pregnancy. Pregnancy massage treatments are very client-specific. Our experienced massage therapists (Jill & Elena) will consider your every need to create a treatment that is tailored just for you, to help treat and relieve all ailments of pregnancy.
Carrying a baby inside you changes your centre of gravity and puts a lot of physical stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also produces the hormone relaxin, which loosens the ligaments in your pelvis making it less stable, and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward. Add to that the extra weight you are carrying and you may find you have an achy lower back or sore hip joints. Regular massage during your pregnancy can help you adjust to the dramatic changes your body is going through as you prepare for childbirth. It is a deeply relaxing and nurturing treatment. We are experienced in working with all kinds of pregnancy symptoms, from basic to complex.
Pregnancy massage can help to
Relieve muscular aches and pains
Promote good sleep
Reduce oedema especially in the feet, ankles and hands
Relieve restless legs
Boost energy levels
Relieve headaches
Relieve anxiety and encourage relaxation
Your massage therapist will determine which parts of your body need most attention and plan her treatment accordingly. Pregnancy massage is given with you lying on your side with pillows giving extra support. The session includes a consultation with regard to current symptoms and medical history, all tailored to the mum-to-be. The treatment is safe during all 3 trimesters.
Postnatal Massage
We also offer postnatal massage treatments with Elena in the comfort of your own home for the first 3 months after birth, also known as the fourth trimester. She will come to your house with a massage table and all the equipment needed for a blissful postpartum treatment. Please enquire about this using the contact page. Postnatal massage treatments are also available at our treatment room.
Many cultures observe a period of confinement or quarantine, often for around 40 days, when new mothers are looked after by relatives and friends, and encouraged to rest, relax, bond with their baby, and concentrate on feeding. This postpartum care can include massage, cooking, cleaning, and childcare.
A postnatal massage is one of the most practical recovery tools you can book postpartum. It involves a combination of a traditional Mexican rebozo 'closing the bones' massage and osteopathic-based techniques designed to support the realignment of the pelvis and its organs, the closing of separated abdominal muscles and relief from the strain of breastfeeding on the neck, chest and shoulders. This can be combined with Swedish massage techniques to create a bespoke treatment for each client according to what their body needs.
The benefits are not just relaxation. It provides relief - less tension, less heaviness, better mobility, and a nervous system that finally gets a chance to come down. If your body feels like it’s been carrying everything, a good postnatal massage can help you feel supported again. It is particularly good for:
Lower back and hip tightness
Leg and foot fatigue and swelling
Stress relief and feeling less 'wired'
More restful sleep, even if sleep is still broken
Improved circulation and muscle release, making you feel less stiff and more mobile
